Wild Canary Café: A Sustainable Oasis of Architectural Brilliance and Inclusive Design

Construction becomes an art form with a commitment to sustainability. Rather than erasing history, the project embraced it by repurposing significant portions of the original building. The internal and external hardwood frame, rear concrete, internal timber floors, and original rear zinc alum tray roofing were all reincarnated into a contemporary design. The addition of new elements, such as timber framing, plasterboard, wall and ceiling lining, perfectly complements the existing structure.
Environmental responsibility extends beyond construction, evident in the water and sewage efficiency strategies employed. Triple water tanks, each boasting a 25,000L capacity, are fed by rainwater from the nursery roof, water pumped from a local creek, and recycled water from nursery irrigation. This trifecta of sustainable water sources not only demonstrates an eco-conscious approach but also contributes to the vitality of the surrounding environment. To complete this cycle of responsibility, an on-site earth-safe sewage treatment facility discreetly resides at the rear of the building.
Designed in accordance with AS1428.2 with enhanced and additional requirements – Buildings and facilities, the centre ensures accessibility with ramp access to car parking and toilets, affirming its commitment to a universally accessible space.
Energy efficiency becomes second nature within the café's walls. Airflow is artfully managed through the conservative use of split system room A/Cs and an abundance of ceiling fans. This conscious approach not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances the comfort of patrons, creating an atmosphere that seamlessly blends sustainability with functionality.
